There’s something magical about the golden hour along the California coast. The way the light dances on the water, painting everything in warm amber tones, creates a moment of pure serenity.

I spent this particular evening at Big Sur, watching as the sun slowly descended toward the horizon. The waves crashed rhythmically against ancient rocks, and seabirds called out overhead. Every few moments, the light would shift, revealing new textures and colors in the landscape.

The Perfect Timing

Golden hour doesn’t last long—typically just 30 to 60 minutes after sunrise or before sunset. This fleeting nature makes it both challenging and rewarding for photographers. You need to arrive early, scout your locations, and be ready when the moment arrives.

Camera Settings

For these shots, I used:

  • Camera: Canon EOS R5
  • Lens: 24-70mm f/2.8
  • Settings: ISO 400, f/8, 1/125s
  • Filter: Circular polarizer to enhance colors

The Experience

Beyond the technical aspects, what makes these moments special is the experience itself. Standing there, camera in hand, completely present in the moment—that’s what photography is really about. The photographs are just mementos of the feelings we experience in these beautiful places.

The coast reminds us that beauty is often found in transitions—between day and night, land and sea, stillness and motion.
